"Lietenant" is a Junior officer rank for Starfleet. Lieutenants are experienced officers who have several years in service under their belts. By the time an officer becomes a Lieutenant, it is assumed he or she is ready for command training.
The rank of Lieutenant is granted to Lieutenant, JGs who have shown themselves to be worthy of increasing responsibility and command. Officers entering service with either a Medical Doctorate or an Engineering Doctorate are commissioned at the rank of Lieutenant.
RESPONSIBILITIES[]
Lieutenants serve as Department heads on most Starships, and can serve as the 2nd Officer on medium-sized Starships, or as the 1st Officer on smaller ships. Lieutenants also command SCE and Starfleet Special Ops Field Companies.
INSIGNIA[]
As described by the Starfleet Field Manual's protocols for uniforms and insignias, the insignia for a Lieutenant shall be two (2) circular gold pips on the officer's right uniform collar
The insignia for Lieutenant is derived from the ancient naval insignia for Lieutenant, two gold stripes on the officer's shoulder board or uniform sleeve.
